Managers learn by muddling through it – theres gotta be a better way

Hey Reader,

The stress many managers, especially those newer in role, are experiencing right now is overwhelming. Consistently through the past few years, managers in the messy middle of management have been tasked with doing more... and more... with less.

More direct reports.

More scope and responsibility.

More pressure to instantly transition to be a "player-coach".

I'm exhausted for them/you!

Avoid Mistakes Many Managers Make (mmmm alliteration)

New on the blog this week is an in-depth articles on the common mistakes I've seen (and myself made!) for Design Managers stepping up and into their first official management role. Whether you learned Design on the job, at art college or a bootcamp, or via HCI programs, it's unlikely that you learned the basics of managing fellow humans.

The number 1 mistake I see over and over?

Not elevating to a new context of thinking!

Making me think 🤔

A few top reads from the past few weeks:

  1. Katrina Alcorn, veteran Design Leader compares tech culture to Ken's Mojo Dojo Casa House and how tech "breaking up" with Design relates to sexism in the workplace. Read Here.
  2. How 20m a week devoted to culture improves team mental health: Listen here to Morra Aarons-Mele's Anxious Achiever podcast 🎧
  3. Full report from the US Surgeon General on why workplace wellbeing is a priority for societal health here.

Thanks for reading and being with me on this journey to make work suck a wee bit less. 🤩

This is the course I wish I had when I first started leading other people as a Manager. Leap-frog the initial awkward transition by picking up skills and frameworks alongside peers.
